Windows XP Search Problems

I am constantly updating these pages, as more problems are found with Windows XP Search Companion and fixes for them are found.  Additionally, if you’re experiencing the first problem, MS is aware of this issue and is working on a fix.  No additional feedback is being gathered at this time.

Windows XP Doesn’t Save User Settings

Filed under: Windows Xp Fixes — admin @ 1:27 pm

xp_save settings.vbs - Allow User Settings To Be SavedTHIS SCRIPT DOES NOT APPLY TO DISPLAY RESOLUTION SETTINGS

Note:  This fix is preliminary, and has not been tested on a wide range of machines.  The script will not cause any harm, but it may not correct your problem.  Feedback as to the effectiveness of this script would be appreciated.  This VB Script will create the Registry value NoSaveSettings in the following Registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

and set the value to 0.  This has the effect of “disabling” the policy that doesn’t allow user settings to be saved.

To use: Download the xp_save_settings.vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the xp_save_settings.vbs file.  You will be prompted when the repairs have been completed.  You will need to log off/log on for the change to take effect.  This script can be viewed in Notepad or any text editor, as to the specific Registry key and value that are updated.

Windows Update Disabled (Network Policy)

Filed under: Windows Xp Fixes — admin @ 1:26 pm

xp_winupd_netpolicy.vbs - Removes Policy Setting that disables Windows UpdateIf you receive the following error:

Access Denied

Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates on your computer.

If you believe you have received this message in error, please check with your system administrator.

The following will undo the restriction in XP Home or Pro Edition.  To use: Download the xp_winupd_netpolicy.vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). In Windows Explorer, locate the script you just downloaded and double click it.  The script will modify the System Registry and notify you when its done.  This script can be viewed in Notepad or any text editor, as to the specific function of the script and how it works.

Other fixes will be coming for other types of Windows Update restrictions.

Windows Update - Prompts to Install Hotfix - Manual Entry

Filed under: Windows Xp Fixes — admin @ 1:26 pm

XP_Hotfix_Prompt.vbs - Prevents Windows Update from prompting you to install a Hotfix you know is already installed.
Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox

Usage:  Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs and save it to your hard drive.  Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you’ll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix.  No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES.  Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix.  This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.
